Description
Sew Cool After School is a weekly after-school program designed for children who have already learned some basic hand-sewing skills and are excited to step up to a sewing machine, as well as more developed hand sewing/embellishments, embroidery, etc.
We place an emphasis on learning as a creative journey. As such, sometimes we will work with a common lesson plan and other times each child may work led by their own inspiration. Some projects are easily finished in one class, others will need sustained focus, such as garments or a quilt. Project examples can range from scrunchies, tote bags, simple pants/shorts and tops, upcycling & decorating clothing, bedroom decor, gifts and more.Â
Each child will have more than one project going on at a time, so that if they finish a group project before others do, they can continue working with their hands on something fun!
Before joining Sew Cool, we require a private session with each child to review/learn how to operate a sewing machine and a few related basics. This session ensures that the child can slip in and out of the program as school life so often requires, and also allows us to understand each child’s level and interests on a one-to-one basis, which informs our dynamic project planning and teaching. To schedule this, call the shop at 203-421-6853.
We work hard to minimize supply costs for children’s projects, using store remnants, donated thread and fabric scraps, and occasional trips to EcoWorks in North Haven to stock up on fun supplies such as vintage buttons! For projects requiring larger pieces of fabric, all students receive a store discount of 15%.
Many Guilford families know Amanda as an elementary school Speech-Language Pathologist. She engaged her students with creative lessons that fostered language development and social skills. Amanda caught the sewing bug at age 8 when she learned needlepoint. She was introduced to the wonders of a sewing machine in 7th grade Home Ec and hasn’t stopped sewing since. She makes garments, bags, home decor, and quilts. She retired from the school system in 2021, went fabric shopping at Cate’s Sew Modern, and got hired on the spot. She has taught adult quilting classes and can’t wait to share her love of sewing with kids.
