Instructor Bio: Diane began sewing at age 8, but it wasn’t until the mid 2000s that Diane dusted off her sewing machine and returned to quilting, which she’d done sporadically through the years. Needing a bit of a refresher in quilting techniques, Diane took a class at Cate’s (Intro to Quilting) after she and her husband relocated to Guilford, and it’s been “quilting love” ever since! An experienced teacher as well as nurse and attorney, she is excited about teaching quilting, and sharing her love of fabric, quilt designs and all things “quilt-y”!
PREPARATION & SUPPLY LIST BELOW!
Materials Needed to Bring to Class:
Spinning Star Tree Skirt pattern (you can purchase this the day of class if
necessary)
A sewing machine in good working order with cord and foot pedal, as well as ¼”
pressor foot (or basic foot) and new machine needles (80/20 size
recommended). If you are borrowing a machine from a family member or friend,
use it before coming class to be sure you are comfortable with it, and that it has
everything you need for class, such as bobbins, needles, the correct presser foot,
etc.
If you are not bringing a sewing machine, please arrange with Cate before the
day of class to rent one of the shop’s machines.
Quilting tools:
o rotary cutter (45mm) with new blade.
o Ruler: 6” x 24” or 6½” x 24½”
o Neutral cotton thread, such as light grey or beige (Aurifil is a good choice)
o Matching thread for quilting the quilt top
o 1-2 bobbins filled with matching thread
o Small scissors for snipping threadso Long quilting pins
o Marking pencil or pen
o Seam ripper
Fabric: requirements are listed on the pattern, but in case you don’t have the
pattern yet, you will need:
Main color A: 5/8 yard
Main color B: 5/8 yard
Accent color: ½ yard
Background: 5/8 yard
Batting: 60“x 60“
Binding: 5/8 yard
The picture on the pattern will help you identify how the colors go together; you
can also refer to the shop sample in Cate’s store to see how colors are put
together.
We will be cutting the fabric according to the pattern as part of our class, so there is no
prior cutting of fabric required; however, it is highly recommended that you press your
fabric prior to coming to class so that you will have greater assurance of accuracy when
cutting out the pieces of this quilted skirt. We will be working with large areas of bias,
so well-pressed fabric will be helpful to ensure greater accuracy.
Some quilters prefer to pre-wash their fabric; this is an entirely personal choice. If you
do so, you will definitely need to press your fabric afterwards to prepare for cutting.
