Altering a Pattern

https://i0.wp.com/www.sewalongs.com/media/2011/08/marking-armscye-point-500x3331.jpg?resize=461%2C307&ssl=1

When: 4 Sessions on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 PM, Starting September 5th.

Fee: $120 + supplies.  All materials for this class are available at a 15% discount to students.

Have you ever found that a commercial garment pattern fails to fit you properly? Is the bust too small, or the waist too large? Are you in between sizes? Do the shoulder straps fall down your arm? Are the darts way out of place, regardless of what size you attempt to make? Then this class is for you!

In Altering a Pattern, we will learn how to adjust a pattern to best fit you using several different techniques. Each session we will discuss different forms of alteration, and we will build upon what we have previously learned. We will all begin by working from the same pattern, and at the end of the class, we will alter a pattern you own or have used previously to fit perfectly.

School of Sewing

School Of Sewing Book Cover

When: Starting Up Again on Thursday, September 7th! This class will run for 6 consecutive Thursdays from 6-9PM, starting September 7th and ending October 12th.

Fee: $150 + book and supplies.  All class materials are available at a 15% discount to students.

Ages: 16 and older

For those who are not ready to tackle quilt blocks or the outfit of their dreams (or even a set of curtains,) the School of Sewing is the place to be.  Taught by Cate Boeth, the only pre-requisite is that you attend a private $20 Meet Your Maker session with your/our sewing machine and staff at Cate’s Sew Modern.  From there, you will be ready to go!

Over these six sessions, we will use Shea Henderson’s text, “School of Sewing” as a reference.  You will learn to make basic items that are meant to prepare you to pursue  quilting, garment sewing or home decor work.

Projects & Materials:

Session 1: A half yard of a Kona solid.

Session 2: Pillowcases, you’ll need a pillowcase kit.

Session 3: Drawstring bag, there’s a kit for that, too.

Session 4: Aprons, 1 yard for main apron body and 1/2 yard for pocket and strings.

Session 5 & 6: Zip It Pillow, 3/4 yard for pillow, 1/4 yard for binding, 1/2 yard of fusible fleece, 22″, all purpose zipper.

Fancy Fox & Hazel Hedgehog Pillow Workshop with Cate Boeth

When: TBD.  If you’re interested in taking this class, contact us with your availability!

Fee: $90 + materials. All materials are available in store at a 15% discount.

This is both a mini quilting project, and a class in home decor! This workshop will teach you how to piece and quilt a Fox or Hedgehog pillow front, and then how to assemble the pillow. You will go home with a beautiful quilted accent pillow, with optional eyeglass appliqué, and several closure options for removing and inserting the pillow form.

We completed our pillow with the zipper pillow technique from the School of Sewing book by Shea Henderson, which if you have taken our basics class School of Sewing, you know how to do! You may also use the technique in the pattern, which is without a binding.

Meet Your Maker!

Fee: $20 if you are enrolled in a class, or have purchased your machine from us.

$60 for outside machines.

This is a 1 hour sewing machine orientation for students new to their machine, or who may need to rent a machine from the shop for classes or open sews.  This session is a prerequisite to all classes if you are a new sewist, or feel that your skills with your machine are rusty. Bring your personal machine and the manual.

Call or email us today to set up a date & time for this 1-on-1 class!

Open Sew

When: Wednesdays, 5:30-9:00 pm

A free session where sewists can bring their machines (or rent one for $5). Open sews allow participants to take advantage of our cutting and ironing areas as well as the support of peers and available staff.  Not meant as a private lesson, we nonetheless honor the fact that community support is a critical part of building skill sets and that sewing can be isolating otherwise.

Come join others and jump-start friendships as well as skill-building.  Whether you’re starting a new project or trying to conquer an old “UFO” (unfinished object), your presence helps others and their presence supports yours.
