Summer Sewing Camps

We have six weeks of summer camps coming this summer! Students may participate in any number of weeks they would like. The day is split by age: Youth camp (ages 8-12) is in the morning from 9 AM – 12 PM. Teen camp (ages 13-18) is afternoons, from 1-4 PM. The camp week is Monday – Thursday, except for the first week, which will be Tuesday-Friday.

The six weeks are split up into two-week sessions, where the first week is “Learn to Sew”, and the second week is “Fashion Design”. If you would like to do only one week, you may!

The session dates are:

June 20th – 23rd Learn to Sew

June 26th – 29th Fashion Design

July 10th – 13th Learn to Sew

July 23rd – 27th Fashion Design

August 14th – 17th Learn to Sew

August 21st – 24th Fashion Design

Each week-long camp session will be $180. If you have your own sewing machine, it is $160. Any other kits or materials are at an additional cost, and if purchased here, at a 15% discount.

Foundation Paper Piecing 101

One day workshop, Sunday June 18th, 12-5 PM. $65 + Materials.

Come in before the class to purchase supplies, offered at a 15% discount to attendees.

Do you obsess about getting perfect points but not have the patience or precision to do it yet?  Do you want to create an original design or another way to create simple images?  Or do you simply have a ton of scraps, even small ones, you need to put to good use?  No matter what, paper piecing is for you!  Before those crazy quilters in the 1750s went rogue and started to use newspaper to serve as a foundation for their sewing, you had to do it the hard way.  But now, we can not only learn FPP, but truly master it.

We will learn the tools to make a runner or placemat using foundation paper piecing using this wonky log cabin model.  We will also show how the pattern can easily be changed to make a conventionally-aligned version.  Although I used stripes and solids to make mine, you can use any strong contrast fabrics to do this pattern that Kaffe Fassett originally showed.

Meet Your Maker!

$20 if you are enrolled in a class, or have purchased your machine from us.

$60 for outside machines

1 hour sewing machine orientation for students new to their machine, or who may need to rent a machine from the shop for classes or open sews.

This session is a prerequisite to all classes if you are a new sewist, or feel that your skills with your machine are rusty. Bring your personal machine and the manual.

Kids’ Club

Mondays, 4:00-6:00.4 sessions recurring

$110 plus materials, $5/day for machine rental during machine-driven projects.

Sessions will involve techniques of hand-sewing (embroidery, applique, buttons and closures) and sewing machine work.  Projects for the session might include pillow case, tote,  pajama pants, pillow and one other surprise project, chosen by the kids!  Focus will be on building skills and nurturing creativity and originality.

Make-Your-Own Beach Bag

1 day workshop on Sunday, June 25th, 10-6 PM.

$90 plus materials.

In this workshop, we will be making the Poolside Tote by Noodlehead patterns. This is a great starter bag for those wanting to delve into purse and tote making, and uses techniques like inserting a zipper and various hardware installation. The tote’s finished dimensions are 1.5″ deep by 14.5 inches wide, and 14.5″ tall, perfect for throwing in a couple towels, sunscreen, flip-flops and a frisbee for the beach! It even has a key loop, so you’ll always be able to find your keys.

Fancy Fox (or Hazel Hedgehog) Pillow Workshop

One day workshop. Saturday, July 9th. 10-6 PM. $90 plus materials.

This is both a mini quilting project, and a class in home decor! This workshop will teach you how to piece and quilt a Fox or Hedgehog pillow front, and then how to assemble the pillow. You will go home with a beautiful quilted accent pillow, with optional eyeglass applique, and several closure options for removing and inserting the pillow form. We completed our pillow (in the photo, sitting in the center of our shop!) with the zipper pillow technique from the School of Sewing book by Shea Henderson, which if you have taken our basics class School of Sewing, you know how to do! You may also use the technique in the pattern, which is without a binding.

Learn to Sew Cosmetic Bags

1 Day Workshop, Date & Time TBA, $25 + materials.

If you’d like to take this class, email us at catessewmodern@gmail.com with your availability.

In this quick workshop, you will learn to make a small cosmetics case with a zipper and a lining.

This is a great class for those who know some sewing basics but would like to expand their sewing repertoire into the beginnings of bag making. These small bags also make great gifts!

The Basics: Quilting

Starting again in July.

4 Sessions, $125 + materials

Maureen Anderson, Accomplished quilter, educator and 2016’s president of Shoreline Quilters’ Guild, will walk aspirational quilters through an organized and thorough orientation to quilting that includes gaining familiarity with the many tools and techniques necessary to create a finished and quilted four-patch table runner or wall-hanging.

Beginning Quilt Improv

This class will start up again in late July!

Six sessions for $150.

In this class taught by Cate, you will learn the basics of improvisational quilting by studying Cate’s Leah quilt. Your confidence in quilting will skyrocket when you add this technique to your quilting repertoire! Will require some homework; the class has a built in “break” in the middle in order for you to work on your quilt at home.

Altering a Pattern

Not yet scheduled.

Contact us with your availability if you’re interested in taking this class!

Four sessions, $120 + supplies.

Have you ever found that a commercial garment pattern fails to fit you properly? Is the bust too small, or the waist too large? Are you in between sizes? Do the shoulder straps fall down your arm? Are the darts way out of place, regardless of what size you attempt to make? Then this class is for you! In Altering a Pattern, we will learn how to adjust a pattern to best fit you using several different techniques. Each session we will discuss different forms of alteration, and we will build upon what we have previously learned. We will all begin by working from the same pattern, and at the end of the class, we will alter a pattern you own or have used previously to fit perfectly.

Open Sew

Fridays 5:30-9:00 pm

A free session where sewists can bring their machines (or rent one for $5). Open sews allow participants to take advantage of our cutting and ironing areas as well as the support of peers and available staff.  Not meant as a private lesson, we nonetheless honor the fact that community support is a critical part of building skill sets and that sewing can be isolating otherwise.  Come join others and jump-start friendships as well as skill-building.  Whether you’re starting a new project or trying to conquer an old “UFO” (unfinished object), your presence helps others and their presence supports yours.
