Let’s Get Spatial: Map Quilting with Timna Tarr

Have you ever wanted to commemorate a special place? It could be your alma mater’s campus, a vacation spot that’s been in the family for generations, the neighborhood you live in, your town center, even a memorable mountain hike or canoe trip. Whatever speaks to you in terms of place, you can replicate creatively. Using a map to guide you, and adding elements (e.g., texture, color, value and composition) that bring it to life creatively, you can capture that place in a way that speaks to your heart.
Over the course of this workshop, you will learn to make a wall-hanging-sized quilt from a map of your choosing. Pick the spot — use Apple or Google Maps or a paper map — and enlarge it to the size you desire. You’ll want to have it zoomed in enough to have the important (to you) details, but not so large it becomes cluttered and/or unwieldy in size. 24”x36” is probably the maximum.
Special skills learned include comfort with improvisation, use of color theory and composition choices that can heighten impact, problem-solving, as well as use of fusibles in pictorial quilts, raw-edge appliqué, use of bias tape (and creation of bias tape as well). Cate will hold a special follow-up workshop for anyone who needs extra time or help finishing their map if needed.
Bring basic sewing supplies, your machine (or rent one for $10) a large paper map of a location you would like to replicate (large enough to have some good details but no more than 24”x36” max) and a willingness to experiment and play. More detail on supplies needed will be sent upon registration and extra supplies will be made available the day of the workshop as well. If you need to rent a machine, sign up extra-early to be sure we will have one available for you.
Timna’s advice on choosing a map? “I have found that the more detailed the map is, the more I like the finished project. My maps that cover about 4-5 miles in each direction are my favorites in terms of detail. I like working with city maps, but I have also seen very effective maps done of more rural areas. The most important thing is to make sure that the map has a few design elements to focus on: streets, parks, and bodies of water are excellent focal points….If you have any questions about the image you’re considering, I am happy to take a look and give feedback via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.”

Altering a Pattern
When: 4 Sessions on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 PM, Starting September 5th.
Fee: $120 + supplies.
Have you ever found that a commercial garment pattern fails to fit you properly? Is the bust too small, or the waist too large? Are you in between sizes? Do the shoulder straps fall down your arm? Are the darts way out of place, regardless of what size you attempt to make? Then this class is for you!
In Altering a Pattern, we will learn how to adjust a pattern to best fit you using several different techniques. Each session we will discuss different forms of alteration, and we will build upon what we have previously learned. We will all begin by working from the same pattern, and at the end of the class, we will alter a pattern you own or have used previously to fit perfectly.

Fee: $90 + materials. All materials are available in store at a 15% discount.
This is both a mini quilting project, and a class in home decor! This workshop will teach you how to piece and quilt a Fox or Hedgehog pillow front, and then how to assemble the pillow. You will go home with a beautiful quilted accent pillow, with optional eyeglass appliqué, and several closure options for removing and inserting the pillow form.

Meet Your Maker!
Fee: $20 if you are enrolled in a class, or have purchased your machine from us.
$60 for outside machines.
This is a 1 hour sewing machine orientation for students new to their machine, or who may need to rent a machine from the shop for classes or open sews. This session is a prerequisite to all classes if you are a new sewist, or feel that your skills with your machine are rusty. Bring your personal machine and the manual.
Call or email us today to set up a date & time for this 1-on-1 class!
When: Wednesdays, 5:30-9:00 pm
A free session where sewists can bring their machines (or rent one for $5). Open sews allow participants to take advantage of our cutting and ironing areas as well as the support of peers and available staff. Not meant as a private lesson, we nonetheless honor the fact that community support is a critical part of building skill sets and that sewing can be isolating otherwise.
Come join others and jump-start friendships as well as skill-building. Whether you’re starting a new project or trying to conquer an old “UFO” (unfinished object), your presence helps others and their presence supports yours.
GENERAL INFORMATION AND POLICIES:
Each class has a maximum enrollment of six students. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule any class with less than 50% enrollment. Full refunds will be given if this should happen.
